What you need to know
  • Originally the Hyatt Regency Fukuoka — renovated and reopened in 2020 with a striking 42-metre cylindrical library in the lobby housing 5,000 borrowable books
  • Rooms feel slightly aged compared to newer Fukuoka hotels but still comfortably 4-star — daily room cleaning, safe storage and full toiletries are all still here when many modern hotels have quietly dropped them
  • Underground parking available (¥1,500/night) but spaces are narrow and fill up fast — park first, validate at check-in for a single reusable ticket until checkout
  • No pool or onsen — gym on the first floor available 24 hours for hotel guests only
  • Unbeatable location — 7 minutes walk from Hakata Station, Canal City and countless dining options all within easy reach on foot

In July 2026 I stayed at THE BASICS Fukuoka and it was a little bit like a Mini Cooper because it looks really classy on the outside and inside. But the hotel rooms themselves have been refurnished to look modern, keeping up with the latest hotel design trends.

THE BASICS Fukuoka is a 4 star hotel 7 minutes away from Hakata Station. Opened in 2020, it was originally Hyatt Regency Fukuoka but was renovated it when Hyatt closed in 2019. The original building was built in 1993 by architect Michael Graves.

Anyway, I will let you know what my experience was like staying at the THE BASICS Fukuoka, is it really basic as the name suggest, and why you might want to consider staying here on your next trip to Fukuoka.

How to Get to THE BASICS Fukuoka

THE BASICS Hotel is only 7 minutes walk away from Hakata Station, right in the heart of Fukuoka City.

Parking @ THE BASICS Fukuoka

THE BASICS FUKUOKA has underground parking that they share with Sphinx Center and It is ¥1,500 per night. When you first park there grab the parking ticket from the machine and the hotel staff will get you a validated ticket that can be reused until you check out of the hotel.

The parking is first come first serve so it can fill up very quickly. The car park is also extremely narrow with small parking spaces. So if you are driving a big car and the “bigger” parking spaces are filled it could be quite challenging to park there.

Checking in @ THE BASICS Fukuoka

The check in lobby is on the ground floor and it’s one of the coolest looking hotel lobbies. Once you enter the building you will see a very tall cylindrical library that goes about 42m high. There are 6 bookshelves that hold about 5000 books. You can actually borrow them and read them in your room.

The check in process is simple just like any other hotel in Japan. Check in time is from 3pm onward and check out is at 11am.

I have seen some advice saying to park on the side of the road or the drop off area to check in before parking your car underground. I highly discourage you from doing that as the side road is really narrow and doing that would cause unnecessary jams.

The drop off area only really has space for one or two cars at a time so stopping there is an inconvenience to others as well. It is better to park in the underground car park first and get the ticket validated at check in.

THE BASICS Fukuoka: Moderate Twin Room

Once you step into the room, you can’t help but think of the word “basic”. Because at first glance it does look like that in terms of layout and the amenities that are provided. But basic does not mean it’s bad, at least to me.

The amenities section is beside the walkway as you enter the room and there are two twin sized Japanese semi-double beds (120cm x 200cm). Each bed comes with one pillow and a yukata that you can wear.

The beds are pretty standard like most Japanese hotels. They are not too soft or too hard, but lean slightly to the harder side. It was comfortable and I managed to get a goodnight sleep without any problems.

You can’t really hear noise from the outside, either via the windows or the door. So even though you are staying in the heart of Fukuoka it’s really peaceful. The internet speed is also really good at around 40mbps.

Room Amenities

The room has amenities like the fridge, coffee machine, kettle and a smart phone that you can contact the reception with. It doesn’t have a cupboard, but instead it has hangars that you can use to hang your clothes.

There is also a television and a small desk that you can sort of do some light work in. Behind the beds there are an array of sockets and usb charging ports. A standard sort of style in most Japanese hotels.

It even has a safe storage that you can keep more important items in. I’m not sure how many people use it nowadays but it’s nice seeing it as many hotels don’t seem to have that anymore.

Amenities wise it feels quite “basic” as the hotel names suggest. But at the same time some of these “basic” amenities (including toiletries) are not included in modern hotels anymore. So it is a welcome sight that some of these things are still available.

The Toilet

The toilet is quite standard in terms of size and layout and I guess it’s more of a traditional kind of toilet. Everything is in the same space and the shower and tub share the same area. It does not have a split shower and tub space that Japanese homes have.

But it is not small however, I would say it’s big enough. Bigger than a business hotel toilet in Japan where they seem very modular and small.

The toilet also comes with all the amenities such as toothbrushes and shavers. And it also comes with the compulsory shampoo, body wash and conditioner.

Room Cleaning

THE BASICS Fukuoka offers room cleaning every day and you have to put the room cleaning magnet outside your room by 1pm. You can choose between a full cleaning or a simple clean where they just change the towels and collect garbage. They also provide red stickers that you can stick on your extra garbage for the staff to dispose.

It is certainly refreshing as hotels nowadays are starting to only do full cleaning every other day.

Room Pricing

So I paid ¥18,237 per night for the Moderate Twin Room in July 2026. Adding up to ¥36,474 for two nights. The price is about average, not the cheapest or most expensive period. I feel that the price is quite alright for me considering the room and especially the location as well. You can check current rates here.

THE BASICS Fukuoka Hotel Facilities

THE BASICS Fukuoka does not have a pool or onsen. Here are some of the other facilities that you can find at the hotel:

Gym on the first floor

Guest fitness room at THE BASICS FUKUOKA with Life Fitness treadmill, exercise bikes, and strength machines on a wood floor beside a tall window.
Guest fitness room at THE BASICS FUKUOKA. You need to bring one of the room towels.

There is a gym on the first floor with basic equipment like treadmills, spin bikes and fitness machines for working the arms and legs.

The gym is opened 24 hours and is for hotel guests only. You need to bring one of the towels from the room to wipe down the equipment after using.

Self Cloak

On the first floor as well is a luggage storage area for hotel guests to use on their arrival or departure day. So they can travel around Fukuoka without having to bring their luggage around.

It uses a wire lock with a combination pin around the suitcase. It is not a self storage box where the suitcases go inside however.

It is free of charge from 6am to 12am. Luggage left after midnight will be charged ¥1,100/hour.

Money Changer Machine

There is a money changer machine as well on the first floor.

Dry Cleaning

Dry Cleaning Laundry Service at THE BASICS FUKUOKA.

There are plastic bags in the room that you can use for the dry cleaning service in the hotel. There are no coin washers at THE BASICS Fukuoka. There are some around the area, but I ended up using the ones near Canal City so I could shop while waiting.

Breakfast @ THE BASICS Fukuoka

Breakfast is not included by default and cost ¥3,500 for adults and ¥1,500 for kids. It is held at the WHY NOT restaurant on the first floor and is opened from 6.30am to 10am (last entry at 9.30am).

Breakfast is similar to most Japanese hotels where they have a mix of Western and Japanese breakfast items. Including sashimi, onigiri, ramen and other Western breakfast options.

I didn’t manage to try breakfast at the hotel however, but location wise you are spoilt for choice with tons of options nearby.

Some Tips

  • Don’t park at the side of the road to check in first as the street is very narrow.
  • You can actually borrow the books in the library to read and bring it to your room.
  • If you are using the gym you need to bring one of the towels from your room to wipe the equipment after use.

Is THE BASICS Fukuoka Worth It?

THE BASICS Hotel feels like a hotel of yesteryear where if you visited it back in 2019 when it opened, you would probably feel like it’s really modern and up to the 4 star hotel standard that you see in other hotels.

As of 2026 while it does look a bit aged compared to some other newer hotels, it still has the standard and quality that you would expect of a 4 star hotel. It still has amenities and features that you might not find on a newer modern hotel even. And it has really great location although the parking can be a bit stressful if you drive.

For that reason I do recommend THE BASICS Fukuoka as long as you are aware of what you are getting. Which is a slightly aged but still really functional 4 star level hotel.

If you are looking for something more fancier, or with a pool/onsen or something right at the doorstep of Hakata station, then this might not be the hotel for you.

FAQ – THE BASICS Fukuoka

1) Is breakfast included at THE BASICS Fukuoka?

No — breakfast is not included and costs ¥3,500 for adults and ¥1,500 for children. It’s served at the WHY NOT restaurant on the first floor from 6:30am to 10:00am (last entry 9:30am), with a mix of Japanese and Western options including sashimi, onigiri and ramen.

2) Is there parking at THE BASICS Fukuoka?

Yes — underground parking shared with Sphinx Center at ¥1,500 per night. Park first, then bring your ticket to reception at check-in where they’ll give you a validated ticket that works as a single reusable pass until checkout. Spaces are narrow and fill up quickly — don’t stop on the side road or drop-off area to check in first, as the street is very narrow and causes unnecessary congestion.

3) How far is THE BASICS Fukuoka from Hakata Station?

About 7 minutes on foot — one of the closest hotels to Hakata Station in Fukuoka, which makes it very convenient for getting around the city and reaching Fukuoka Airport (about 5 minutes by subway).

4) Does THE BASICS Fukuoka have an onsen or pool?

No — THE BASICS Fukuoka does not have a pool or onsen. It has a 24-hour gym on the first floor with treadmills, spin bikes and fitness machines, available to hotel guests only.

5) What is the library at THE BASICS Fukuoka?

The check-in lobby features a striking 42-metre high cylindrical library with 6 bookshelves housing approximately 5,000 books. Guests can borrow any book and take it back to their room to read during their stay — a genuinely memorable feature that makes the lobby one of the most impressive in Fukuoka.

6) Is THE BASICS Fukuoka good value?

Yes — at ¥18,237 per night for a Moderate Twin Room in an off-peak July period, it’s reasonable for a 4-star hotel 7 minutes from Hakata Station. The location alone justifies the price for most travellers. If you’re looking for something with a pool, onsen or a newer, more modern feel, you may want to consider other options.

7) Does THE BASICS Fukuoka offer daily room cleaning?

Yes — daily room cleaning is available and you can choose between a full clean or a simpler service where they just change towels and collect garbage. Place the room cleaning magnet outside your door by 1pm. Red stickers are provided for any extra garbage you want disposed of.

8) Is there coin laundry at THE BASICS Fukuoka?

Not at the hotel itself — THE BASICS Fukuoka only offers a dry cleaning service. There are coin laundromats in the surrounding area including near Canal City Hakata, which is within walking distance.

9) What room types are available at THE BASICS Fukuoka?

Multiple room types are available including the Moderate Twin Room we stayed in, which features two Japanese semi-double beds (120cm x 200cm), a coffee machine, fridge, kettle, safe storage and a traditional combined shower and tub bathroom. Check the hotel’s booking page for the full selection and current pricing.

10) Is THE BASICS Fukuoka worth it?

Yes — with clear expectations. It’s a slightly aged but still solidly 4-star hotel with an unbeatable location near Hakata Station and genuinely good amenities that many newer hotels have quietly dropped (daily room cleaning, full toiletries, safe storage). If you want something more modern, or with a pool or onsen, look elsewhere. But for a well-located, functional and characterful city stay, THE BASICS Fukuoka delivers.
