In 2026 I visited Akebonoyama Agricultural Park and it was a little bit like visiting Chinatown, because just like every major city has their own version, every city seems to have their own version of a Dutch-style windmill flower park with colourful flowers.
Akebonoyama Agricultural Park (あけぼの山農業公園) is a flower garden and recreational park in Chiba prefecture and is renown for it’s seasonal flowers, relaxing park areas and the iconic Dutch-style windmill to complete the look.
It is free of charge and only about an hour from Tokyo by public transport making it a really good alternative if you are looking for flower gardens and things to do near Tokyo.
I visited the park twice in Feb (late winter) and Apr (Spring), and I will let you know what my experience was like and why you should consider visiting it the next time you visit Tokyo.

How to get to Akebonoyama Agricultural Park
To get to Akebonoyama Agricultural Park, you want to take the Joban Line from Tokyo and alight at Abiko Station. This would take about 38 minutes. From Abiko Station, you want to take the AK31 (Akebonoyama-kouen Iriguchi) to the park. This would take about 10 minutes.
The total travel time would be about an hour and it would cost you ¥910.
Akebonoyama Agricultural Park Car Parking
There are quite a few parking areas at Akebonoyama Agricultural Park. All of them are within 10 minute walking distance towards the main windmill area. The parking is free of charge.
If you have an EV, there is only car park that has an EV charger. That is the car park near the Fuse Benten Temple.
Akebonoyama Agricultural Park Ticket Prices & Opening Hours
Akebonoyama Agricultural Park is opened daily from 9am to 5pm except Monday. As the park is quite big, they will place an announcement around 4.30pm saying that the park will be closing soon.
Akebonoyama Agricultural Park is free of charge.

There are three main periods to see flowers at Akebonoyama Agricultural Park. But the best times are either during the Cherry Blossom period from late March to early April at Sakura Hill, and the Tulips around mid to late April.
Akebonoyama Agricultural Park The Tulip Fields
The main attraction of Akebonoyama Agricultural Park by far is the Tulip Fields with the Dutch-style windmill as a backdrop. Here you can find an estimated 160,000 tulips with 80-100 over varieties all neatly arranged in rows and semi circles.
The tulips are really wild and natural looking, like they are in their natural habitat as compared to some store bought flowers that look like they were made in a lab. Unfortunately we either visited a few days too late or because it rained in the morning, so the flowers looked slightly past their best. It was still a very nice and tranquil setting that captured that Dutch-style flower garden feeling well.
Best Place to take photos at Akebonoyama Agricultural Park
The best place to take photos at Akebonoyama Agricultural Park is undoubtedly standing at the tulip fields, with the view of the Dutch-style windmill in the background in between the trees.
As there is only one iconic spot to take photos, there might be a queue to take photos so depending on how busy it is you might have to wait a bit.
Also going on a sunny day is really important for taking nice beautiful flowers at the park. On the day that we visited it rained in the morning, so by the time that we reached it was still slightly gloomy. Adding that the tulips were slightly past their best and the photos can look slightly depressing.
Akebonoyama Agricultural Park in Winter
I also visited the park in Feb (late winter). Obviously the flowers and leaves are not ready yet, but it was still a nice relaxing way to spend some time in the park. It’s really amazing to me how different Japan can look in different seasons. I almost didn’t recognize the place when I came back a few months later.
Sakura Hill
Sakura Hill (さくら山, Sakurayama) is a hill within the park that has about 350 cherry blossom trees of different varieties, making it a lovely spot for cherry blossom viewing. The bloom periods are around late March to early April, exact dates will be different from year to year.
We were there unfortunately too late for cherry blossoms in general so we were not able to see any.
Japanese Garden
Other parts of Akebonoyama Agricultural Park include the Japanese Garden and Aquatic Plant Garden. It is a relaxing garden that has a pond, streams, a bamboo grove and some seasonal flowers.
It is similar to a lot of other city parks that you might find in Japan. While it is not really the main highlight of Akebonoyama Agricultural Park, it is worth walking around just to get the relaxing tranquil vibes of the garden.

I actually didn’t know about these rules until after I reached back at the hotel. At the time we were not earning anything from this blog, but I was not sure if I was allowed to take photos for the blog. I then wrote them a quick email explaining my situation.
They later wrote back that they will waive the “photography fee” this time and hope that we will visit the park again if we had the opportunity. If you are in a similar situation please write in to them and clarify the situation.

Some Tips
- The carpark near the Fuse Benten Temple has an EV charger.

- There are some residential houses and farms within the park, so be careful about where you walk and taking photographs.
- Try to go on a sunny day when taking photos as dark skies make the pictures slightly depressing.
- There aren’t any trash bins so you have to dispose of them back at your hotel/home.
Should you Avoid, Shortlist or Visit Akebonoyama Agricultural Park?
If you are looking for some beautiful flowers and things to do near Tokyo, Akebonoyama Agricultural Park is a good place to visit for that. It’s only about 1 hour out from Tokyo by public transport making a day trip really feasible.
Timing is always tricky when it comes to flower blooms and it’s the same here. For us we visited on 22nd April and the tulips already looked like they were slightly past their best. For this reason I would say shortlist it first and check the tulip bloom status on their Instagram for more updates.
How long to spend at Akebonoyama Agricultural Park?
It depends on what season it is as Akebonoyama Agricultural Park is quite big and you can spend about 1.5 – 2 hours if you want to walk through the whole park. The main attraction of the park is the Dutch-style windmill tulip fields (in Spring) so you probably want to spend most of your time there taking photos.
Sakura Hill is not really big so about an hour there should be enough to enjoy the Cherry Blossoms.

Things to do in Tsukuba
If you are thinking of traveling further out from Tokyo, you can consider visiting Tsukuba. Tsukuba may be the science city but that’s not all there is to it. There are other beautiful flower parks and museums and mountains that are worth visiting.
I personally feel that Mount Tsukuba is one place not to be missed and is worth visiting if you are traveling to that area.

Hitachi Seaside Park
If you are looking for another flower park in Ibaraki, Hitachi Seaside Park is a must go especially during the nemophila season from April to May. The nemophila flower hill is extremely beautiful and magical and is probably one of the most iconic scenery in Japan.
We visited Hitachi Seaside Park during the same week and their section of tulip flowers were still in peak bloom and in really great condition.
