Oarai Marine Tower, a tall blue-glass observation tower in Oarai, Japan, viewed from the ground against a clear blue sky.

Our Rating: 3.8/5

Pacific Ocean and Mount Tsukuba views, anime café on the second floor, and best paired with other attractions in Oarai.

TL;DR – Yes, Oarai Marine Tower is worth it if you are visiting other places in Oarai as well.

Japan does not have an obsession with observation towers. But when you travel around Japan it seems like every city has at least one observation tower, or every other building has an observation deck on the top floor.

While travelling around Ibaraki in Feb 26 I came across Oarai Marine Tower, a 60 metre tall glass panelled observation tower that offers a 360 degree view over the Pacific Ocean, Oarai Town and sometimes Mount Tsukuba.

Anyway, I will let you know what my experience was like at Oarai Marine Tower and a very interesting surprise that I was not expecting.

All photos on this page are mine, shot on an iPhone 11 pro.

How to get to Oarai Marine Tower

Oarai Marine Tower is about a 15 minute walk from the Oarai Station. If you are travelling from Tokyo, take the Tokiwa 69 Limited Express Katsuta to Mito Station and change to the Kashimarinkai Tetsudo Oarai-Kashima Line Oarai Station.

The total travel time would be about 2 hours and would cost ¥4,420.

It’s at this point that I must say I don’t recommend taking a day trip out just to see the Oarai Marine Tower on it’s own due to the long travel time. I recommend visiting it if you are visiting other attractions in the area as well.

If you are looking for something else to do in the area, check out this other observation tower about 30 minutes away.

Oarai Marine Parking

Oarai Marine Tower’s History

The Entrance to Oarai Marine Tower.

Oarai Marine Tower was opened in 1988 as a new landmark beside the Oarai Port Central Park. Back then, it was built during a period when many Japanese coastal towns were investing in symbolic observation towers to promote tourism and showcase it’s local seascapes.

It has remained one of Oarai’s key attractions since it opened, alongside the Aqua World Oarai Aquarium and the Oarai Isosaki Shrine. There is also another pop cultural reason for visiting the Oarai Marine Tower but we will talk about it later.

Oarai Marine Tower Gift Shop

Once you have purchased your tickets and entered the building, you would see the gift shop before entering the lift. They sell the standard well packaged omiyage (お土産) like snacks, sweets, dried seafood products from their fishing port. They also sell key chains, magnets, postcards and soft toys.

Some of the souvenirs are certified as “Oarai brand products” meaning that they use ingredients or products from the local Oarai area. They also have soft toy souvenirs available from the nearby Aqua World Ibaraki Oarai Aquarium.

The first floor is free of charge so you don’t need a ticket to look around the gift shop.

Oarai Marine Tower Observation Deck

Observation Deck Lift Lobby.

Once you have taken the lift up, you would be greeted to the beautiful view around you. At 55meters high, you can see the Oarai Port District, Oarai Sun Beach, the Pacific Ocean and the nearby neighbourhoods.

However that’s not all there is to see. The true fun is in the stuff that you can see in the distance.

Mount Tsukuba & Mount Kaba

Detailed southwest view from the top of Oarai Marine Tower overlooking Oarai town, intersections, parking areas, and suburban houses with mountains visible on the horizon, Ibaraki, Japan
Can you see Mount Tsukuba and Mount Kaba?

From the South-West view looking inland, you would be able to see the Mount Tsukuba (877m) and Mount Kaba (709m) mountain ranges. However on the day I was there it was fairly cloudy in the distance, so I could only see the silhouette of the mountains.

I actually climbed Mount Tsukuba and it was a sweaty but really memorable experience. It is another great place to see stunning views as you are much much higher up.

If you would like to find out about how to climb Mount Tsukuba check out our guide here.

If you really squint your eyes you would be able to see Kasama City and Hitachinaka City. You can see buildings from those cities rather clearly but you probably won’t know what that is without the help of the information boards.

One more bonus building if you squint super hard you can see a really tall white building. You actually really can’t miss it as there are no other tall buildings in the area. That is the G1 Tower by Hitachi that they use to test elevators and it stands at 213.5 meters tall. Unfortunately it’s not open to the public but I bet the views from there would be really great.

Kashimanada Sea, Tokyo and Mount Fuji?

From the South view you would be able to see the Oarai Sun Beach, the Kashimanada Sea (stretch along the Pacific Coast), some nuclear facilities and get this – Mount Fuji. For reference, Tokyo is about 100km in that direction and 197km from Oarai Marine Tower is Mount Fuji.

I could barely see Mount Tsukuba about 40km away so I unfortunately was not able to see Mount Fuji. But if have the chance to be able to see it I bet it would be an amazing sight.

Girls und Panzer Cafe Panzer Vor

On my way down, I decided to visit the second floor as I remembered seeing a cafe sign in the lift. When I exited the lift, I was greeted with all sorts of anime posters, drawings, manga and fan art. I had no idea what was going on.

It turns out it is an anime cafe collaboration with the anime Girls und Panzer”. An anime series about the fictional Oarai Girl’s academy that is set in Oarai. Many of Oarai City’s buildings such as the streets, shops and landmarks including the Oarai Marine Tower are featured in the anime.

Since the anime aired, Oarai and it’s attractions have become sort of like a pilgrimage for the fans of the series. The cafe has many collectibles, souvenirs, gachapon toys, fan art and is designed with themes from the anime. It even has Girls und Panzer themed food as well.

The Girls und Panzer Cafe Panzer Vor is open from 10am to 6pm (last order at 5pm) and is closed on Tuesdays. You don’t need to purchase a ticket to go to the Girls und Panzer Cafe Panzer Vor. Just let the staff know that you are going to level 2 before taking the lift.

Girls und Panzer stamp‑rally station

Back on the first floor in the corner there is a small table with ink stamps from the Girls und Panzer anime. You can actually collect stamps from other attractions in Oarai that were featured in the anime:

  • Oarai Marine Tower
  • Oarai Station
  • Aqua World Oarai Aquarium
  • Oarai Isosaki Shrine
  • Oarai Seaside Station

Quite an interesting way to make you visit all the other attractions in Oarai as well.

Things to do Nearby

As I mentioned earlier I don’t recommend visiting Oarai Marine Tower on it’s own. Here are some other things that you can pair with nearby:

Oarai Isosaki Shrine

Probably one of the more famous attractions (or photos) you may have seen of Oarai is the Oarai Isosaki Shrine with the Kamiiso no Torii gate on some rocks with crashing waves. It is a beautiful spot to take photos when the sun rises as the sun would appear between the torii gate. It also appears in the Girls und Panzer anime.

Oarai Sun Beach

Oarai Sun Beach is a 1km plus stretch of white sand with very shallow and gentle water making it popular with families and beginner surfers. It is part of the Oarai Prefectural Seaside Park and is a short walk from the Oarai Train Station. It is also near the Aqua World Oarai and Oarai Marine Tower.

Oarai Seaside Station

Oarai Seaside Station is a seaside shopping and dining complex near Oarai Sun Beach and Oarai Marine Tower. It is a two storey outlet style mall and it has shops, restaurants, cafes including the Oarai Maiwai Ichiba that sells Ibaraki specialties like dried sweet potatoes, seafood and local vegetables.

It also has an official Girls und Panzer store that has merchandise, art and exhibits. It’s a perfect stop for lunch while visiting the attractions in Oarai.

Aqua World Ibaraki Prefecture Oarai Aquarium

Aqua World Oarai is a large aquarium that has 60 tanks with about 70,000 creatures from about 580 species of freshwater and saltwater creatures.

Besides the Oarai Isosaki Shrine, the Aqua World Oarai is probably one of the biggest attractions in Oarai and one that I would be visiting the next time I am there.

Some Tips

– Try to go on sunny clear days to see as much as possible.

– You can’t bring pets to Oarai Marine Tower.

– The observation deck felt very bright (maybe because of the glass panels), so you might want to wear sunglasses when the sun is really bright.

– The information boards in the observation deck are all in Japanese, but you can just take a picture and get AI to translate it.

– Free Wifi is available on the 1st floor and 3rd floor Observation Deck.

Do I recommend Oarai Marine Tower?

I do recommend visiting Oarai Marine Tower but only if you are pairing it with other attractions in the area. The views are generally great and it is a bonus if you can see most of the places on the information board like Mount Tsukuba and Mount Kaba.

Being able to see Mount Fuji from here is a really rare sight and you would probably feel like you caught a rare Pokemon if you managed to see it.

If you are looking for another Observation Deck with great views (potentially seeing Mount Fuji) about 30 mins away, check out Art Tower Mito.

If you are a fan of the anime series “Girls und Panzer” you would definitely want to check out Oarai Marine Tower, the Girls und Panzer Cafe Panzer Vor and the rest of Oarai City.

My Rating: 3.8 / 5

★★★½

Pacific Ocean and Mount Tsukuba views, anime café on the second floor, and best paired with other attractions in Oarai.

When is the best time to visit Oarai Marine Tower?

The best time to visit would be on a sunny clear day so that you can see as much as possible. They did mention visiting on clear winter days in the morning and early afternoon to see Mount Fuji. However I was there in February and couldn’t see Mount Fuji. I could hardly see Mount Tsukuba even.

How long should I spend at Oarai Marine Tower?

I spent about 30 minutes at Oarai Marine Tower so around 30-45 minutes would be great enough to see and take photos. If you are visiting the Girls und Panzer cafe then you might spend more time there.
