Our Rating: 4.1/5

Largest Peony collection in Japan, relaxing flower garden for family, hidden gem outside Tokyo.

TL;DR – Yes, Peony Garden Tokyo is 100% worth the visit.

Disclaimer: I am not sponsored for this post. I decided to visit Peony Garden Tokyo because it looked interesting.

On 20th April 2026 I visited Peony Garden Tokyo and it’s a little bit like visiting the largest collection of Pokemon Toys but its only Pikachu Toys. Because they have a large garden collection full of beautiful flowers but they are all peonies.

Opened in 1989, Peony Garden Tokyo (つくば牡丹園) is one of the world’s largest peony gardens with over 60,000 peonies, about 800 varieties of peonies in a 6.6 hectare garden. It is 100% pesticide free and is part of their broader sustainable agriculture initiative.

Anyway, I will let you know what my experience was like visiting Peony Garden Tokyo and why you should consider it on your next visit to Japan.

Photos on this page are mine, shot on an iPhone 11 pro. Nicer photos were shot by Tessa Leong on a Sony A7 IV.

How to get to Peony Garden Tokyo

Probably the first thing to mention is that Peony Garden Tokyo is not in Tokyo, but its in Tsukuba Science City.

Tsukuba Express + Kantetsu Bus

Now that that’s clarified, the fastest way (by public transport) to get to Peony Garden Tokyo is by taking the Tsukuba Express Line to Midorino Station. From there, change to the Kantetsu Bus to Kukizaki Wakaguri stop. The bus stop is only a 6 minute walk to the garden so it is fairly accessible by transport still.

The total travel time would be about 1hr 30mins and would cost about ¥1510.

By Car

Lots of parking at Tsukuba Peony Garden.

Traveling by car is still the fastest way to Peony Garden Tokyo and will take about an hour. There is also plenty of parking at the garden.

Peony Garden Tokyo Tickets

Tickets to Peony Garden Tokyo costs ¥1200 for adults. It is free of charge for high school students or younger.

Season Pass tickets cost ¥2000 and this will allow you to visit more than once during the season.

Take note the only payment methods accepted at the ticketing office are cash or by QR Code.

Peony Garden Tokyo Opening Hours

Peony Garden Tokyo opens from 9:00am to 5:00pm everyday during opening season.

When is the best time to visit Peony Garden Tokyo?

Best time to visit would be Golden Week in early May. This year it’s open from 9th April to 24th May. They are usually opened from this period every year but the dates might change slightly. Check their website and Instagram for the exact dates as they announce their opening period there.

I visited on the 20th April and there were quite a lot of peonies that were blooming, but there also quite a lot that were not ready yet. It was probably still a bit too early and visiting in early May should provide a better experience.

Peony Calendar

The different peony breeds bloom in different dates through their opening period. You can check this calendar to see what peony breeds you would be seeing during your visit.

Inside the Peony Garden

Main garden path and plant sales area at Peony Garden Tokyo, with potted flowers for sale on the left, visitors walking around, and lush green trees under a bright partly cloudy sky.
Peony Garden entrance and tickets are on the left.

When you first enter the garden, you will be given an A3 size map with all the different breeds of peonies that you will be able to see, and the peony calendar for when they will bloom. The 2026 map was in Japanese but the staff knew that I’m a foreigner so he gave me last year’s map that was in English.

There are two main categories of peonies: Tree Peonies (Botan / 牡丹) and Stem Peonies (Shakuyaku / 芍薬).

Tree Peonies (Botan / 牡丹)

Tree Peonies are peonies that are grown on woody branches, and are often called the “King of Flowers” because of their grand and magnificent blooms. They bloom earlier in April so we saw more of these kinds of peonies there.

Stem Peonies (Shakuyaku / 芍薬).

Stem Peonies are Herbaceous plants with smooth leaves and round buds. They are celebrated in Japan for their simple and refined beauty. They bloom slightly later in May so you will see more of these then.

Other Flowers

You can find out more about the different breeds of peonies from their website here.

Waterfront Area (水辺エリア)

Inside the garden there is a pond where you can see the “Peony Raft”, it’s 5000 floating peony flowers on the water. However this is only available in mid May so we didn’t get to see it. It’s still a very peaceful place to see some botan peonies and take a stroll.

You can also do bird watching in this area, there are kingfishers that dive for fish. We also didn’t get to see any however.

Peony Garden Stamp Rally

There is a stamp rally where you can collect 8 different stamps in different parts of the garden. After collecting all the stamps you can exchange it for a prize. They are not difficult to find as there are signs that guide you. It’s quite an interesting way to get you to visit the whole garden.

There was actually a group of elderly women who were rushing around the garden looking for all the stamp locations. Did not expect to see that!

The prize for the stamp rally is quite interesting – a Pokemon style collectible card about a breed of peony. Its in Japanese but still quite an interesting souvenir as some of the other stamp rallies in the area don’t give prizes.

Food & Facilities – Harvest Cafe

In the middle of Peony Garden Tokyo is a cafe/shop called Harvest Cafe. They sell drinks like coffee (saza サザ coffee), Peony Tea (芍薬茶 Shakuyaku Cha), Roasted Sweet Potato Latte (焼き芋ラテ) and some food like brown rice curry.

Sweet Potato Latte @ Harvest Cafe. Really fresh and refreshing taste.

We tried the sweet potato latte and it tasted literally like drinking a blended sweet potato drink. You can really taste the freshness of the sweet potatoes and it’s really light and easy to drink.

The Harvest Cafe accepts Cash or Card payments.

Harvest Cafe and Gallery Shop

Inside the Harvest Cafe and Gallery Shop

Inside the Harvest Cafe there is a shop with some things on sale. They sell all sorts of handmade ceramic crafts, flower lamps and flower postcards of the peonies found in the garden. The coolest looking thing I saw was a flower art/drawing in (or on?) a piece of glass.

A nice way to enjoy your drink and check out the handmade items.

Peony Garden Tokyo Plant Shop

Just beside the ticket office in the main area there is a plant shop where you can buy different types of plants. You can buy different breeds of peonies, other potted plants, peony tea and organic compost/fertilizer that they use in their garden.

Some Tips

– Be careful not to touch the flowers as you might be fined by the garden.

– Check the calendar for dates when the different flowers will bloom. Especially if you are particular about seeing a certain breed.

– The garden advises not to bring pets (except for service dogs) to protect the natural ecosystem of the garden.

– Stroller and wheelchair friendly.

– Ticket payments are cash or QR code only. However the Harvest Cafe inside accepts card payment methods.
